About Fortified Wines
Fortified wines straddle the line between wine and liquor. They contain between 15 and 20 percent alcohol content and are often sweeter and richer than traditional wines. These wines can be fortified by adding sugar or liquor during the aging process. Sometimes, herbs are added to the mix as well. We carry popular varieties from some of the best brands.
Port
Port is a Northern Portuguese red wine that is sweet to dry and goes well with chocolate. It is commonly served as a dessert wine.
Sherry
Sherry is a Spanish fortified wine made of white grapes fortified with brandy. It is an excellent after-dinner drink as well as an ingredient in many five-star dishes. Sipped alone or served with food, few things rival a good sherry.
Vermouth
Vermouth is a fortified wine that is infused with aromatic herbs like cardamom, cinnamon, chamomile and marjoram. The exact recipe of each brand of vermouth is a closely guarded secret passed down through families.
Marsala
This favorite addition to rich Italian cooking once began as an inexpensive substitute for the imported fortified wines that Italians loved. It comes in two versions: the younger, less potent fine and the stronger, aged superiore.
