Akashi single malt is made at the White Oak distillery of Eigashima Shuzo, a small sake and shochu brewery on the coast at Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture.
This one spends two years in sherry butts and three more in hogsheads, and it's bottled without chill filtering or added colour. The sherry leads: dried fruit, raisins and prunes, cinnamon and a little grapefruit, with a faint thread of smoke from lightly peated malt and a warm, nutty finish.
It's a rare chance to taste a small Japanese distillery's single malt. For the same producer's everyday blend, try Akashi White Oak.
Pour it neat, then add a few drops of water; it opens up the dried fruit.
We carry it in limited quantities. More bottles are under Japanese whisky, and the rest of our whiskey is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
