Port and sherry are fortified wines: grape spirit is added during or after fermentation, which gives them more body and warmth and helps them keep longer once opened. Port comes from Portugal's Douro Valley in several styles: ruby and Late Bottled Vintage for rich dark fruit, tawny (including 10, 20, 30 and 40 year) for nutty caramel notes, white port for aperitifs, and vintage port for the cellar. We carry port from Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca, Graham's, Croft, Sandeman and Niepoort, sherry from Lustau and Harveys, plus Madeira and dry and sweet Marsala for cooking. Brands and bottlings can change.
Serve port slightly cool in a small glass with blue cheese, walnuts or dark chocolate. An opened ruby keeps for a few weeks and a tawny for longer. For a summer aperitif, try white port with tonic over ice.
