Piedmont, in northwest Italy, is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from Nebbiolo, along with everyday Barbera and Dolcetto, Gavi whites and sweet, lightly sparkling Moscato d'Asti. Producers include Vietti, Damilano, Bruno Giacosa, Renato Ratti, Michele Chiarlo, La Scolca and Batasiolo.
Tip: Barolo is firm when young, so decant it and serve it with braised meat or mushroom dishes. For a weeknight red, Barbera d'Asti or Barbera d'Alba is the easier choice. Bottles change through the year.
