In 1982 Bruno Giacosa bought vineyard land at Falletto in Serralunga d'Alba, the same year his daughter Bruna joined the business, which she now leads. Bruno died in January 2018. Falletto is an estate monopole, and this white-label Barolo is separate from the red-label Riserva.
The 2021 is 100% Nebbiolo from south-facing marl and sandstone, with vines averaging about 35 years. A German retailer reports about 25 days of spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, followed by close to three years in large French oak barrels. It's 15% alcohol.
Retailers describe sour cherry, plum, candied violets and tobacco over firm, ripe tannins. Decanter praises its elegance, polish and precision, and Jeb Dunnuck notes lovely purity and clarity.
Against Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2021, Falletto is a single-vineyard Serralunga monopole built for long aging; for a Barolo to lay down for decades, choose Falletto.
James Suckling says it's best after 2027 but already a joy to taste, and one retailer gives a window to 2049 and beyond. Serve at 18 to 20°C with braised beef or truffled pasta.
