Monte degli Angeli Barolo is imported into New York by Monsieur Touton Selection and made by Tenute Neirano, the Sperone family's cellars based in Monferrato, Piedmont.
As a Barolo DOCG, it is made entirely from Nebbiolo grown within the Barolo zone of the Langhe hills. It's a Barolo label rather than a single-cru bottling, which keeps the price well below most Barolo.
Expect dried cherry and loganberry, autumn leaves and a hint of ginger, with fine, spice-coated tannins.
Against Renato Ratti Ochetti Langhe Nebbiolo, Monte degli Angeli is a full Barolo DOCG rather than a Langhe Nebbiolo; for a Barolo at an everyday price, choose Monte degli Angeli.
Open it an hour or so ahead, or pour it through a decanter, and serve it at cool room temperature. It suits braised beef, mushroom risotto, roast lamb, tajarin with butter and sage, or a plate of aged Piedmontese cheeses.
