Pelassa is a family estate in Montà d'Alba, in the Roero, founded in 1960 by Mario Pelassa and now run by his sons Davide and Daniele. The family farms about 15 hectares in the Roero and Verduno.
San Pancrazio is 100% Barbera under the Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC. Importer notes for the following vintage describe vines at about 330 meters, Guyot-trained and picked by hand in mid-October, then 12 months in French and Slavonian oak casks and barrels and another 12 months in bottle. The Superiore tier gets longer oak aging.
A retailer describes deep ruby color, ripe berries with a hint of vanilla, and a full-bodied palate that is solid yet soft and round. The UK importer adds black cherry, plum, velvety tannins and an earthy finish.
Against Cartuxa Évora Colheita, Pelassa is a single-grape, oak-aged Barbera from Piedmont; for an Italian red with pasta night, choose Pelassa.
A retailer suggests serving it at 16 to 18°C and says it will develop for another three to four years. Pour it with pizza, tajarin with ragù or roast pork.
