Cantina Zaccagnini has made wine in Bolognano, in the hills of Abruzzo, since 1978. The Tralcetto line is the one with a small vine twig tied around the neck of every bottle. The Italian group Argea bought the winery in 2023, and founder Marcello Zaccagnini stays on as brand ambassador.
This is 100% Montepulciano from vines on clay soils, harvested in September. The grapes ferment for about 15 days with the cap kept submerged, and the wine matures on its lees in stainless steel until bottling. There's no oak.
The winery describes a purple-red color with violet glints, ripe red berries and white pepper, and soft, harmonious tannins with good length.
Against Villa Antinori Rosso, Zaccagnini is juicier and unoaked; for pizza night, choose the Montepulciano.
The winery suggests cold cuts, pasta and pizza with bold toppings, and serving it at 14 to 16°C in a tulip glass.
