Appleton Estate 15 Year Black River Casks is a blend of pot and column still rums, every one aged at least 15 years in American oak bourbon barrels on the estate in Jamaica's Nassau Valley, where distilling was first documented in 1749. Black River Casks is a name, not a special finish; it honors the river that supplies the estate's limestone-filtered water. It is bottled at 43%.
It is intensely aromatic, with fermented pineapple and banana, crème brûlée and leather, then a dry palate of baked cherry, espresso and baking spice.
This holds its own against bourbon or Scotch of the same age at a lower price. It has more oak and depth than Appleton Estate 12; for the top of the range, see Appleton Estate 21.
Sip it neat, slowly, with a few drops of water if you like.
More Appleton bottles are under rum. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
