Argyle Winery in Dundee, Oregon, was founded in 1987 by Rollin Soles, and Nate Klostermann has been winemaker since 2013. Argyle says its Extended Tirage program, which ages part of the Vintage Brut longer on its lees under crown cap, was inspired by Christian Bizot of Bollinger.
This traditional-method 2012 is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley. The fruit was cold-pressed, then fermented and aged six months, 80% in stainless steel and 20% in neutral barrels. It was disgorged on 10 August 2022, ten years after harvest, with a dosage of 2.5 g/L, so it's very dry. It's 12.5% alcohol.
The winery describes juicy pear and golden apple, a round, vibrant palate with a fine mousse that gives weighted richness, and baked spice-cake aromas from the long aging.
Against Roederer Estate L'Ermitage 2017, the Argyle is five vintages older, spent a decade before disgorgement and costs less; for a vintage sparkler with long lees age, choose Argyle.
Argyle suggests tarte Tatin or pork roulade alongside. Serve it chilled.
