Salvatore Averna began making this amaro in Caltanissetta, Sicily, in 1868, from a recipe the monk Fra Girolamo gave his family. Herbs, roots and spices are infused with oils of Sicilian bitter orange, lemon and pomegranate, then blended with caramel and rested for 45 days. The infusion is still made in Caltanissetta, and it is bottled at 29%.
It pours nearly black. Espresso, cola and dark chocolate lead, with candied orange, sage and mint behind, and the bitterness arrives late on a long herbal finish.
Averna is fuller and darker than Amaro Montenegro and much gentler than Fernet-Branca. If you want one amaro for a nightcap or a Black Manhattan, this is it.
Pour it neat or over a large cube with a twist of orange, or stir it with rye in place of sweet vermouth.
The rest of our amari are under liqueurs and cordials. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
