The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year was launched in 1993 using a method malt master David Stewart developed in 1982, now known as cask finishing. The whisky spends at least twelve years in American oak casks, then about nine months in European oak oloroso sherry casks.
It is then married in large oak tuns for a few months before bottling. It is smooth and juicy, with golden raisin and dried apricot on the nose, then honey, nuts and a touch of smoke, finishing with cocoa and clove. Balvenie still grows some of its own barley in Dufftown.
For a sherry-finished Speyside malt that pleases almost everyone, DoubleWood is our pick. For a rum-cask finish, choose Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask; for a single barrel, see Balvenie 12 First Fill Single Barrel.
Sip it neat or with a splash of water.
We carry it in the 750ml size. It is also on our Balvenie page. More bottles are under single malt Scotch, and the rest of our Scotch is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
