Banhez Ensamble is a joven (unaged) mezcal from San Miguel Ejutla in Oaxaca, Mexico, made from about 90% espadín and 10% barril agave and bottled at 42% alcohol. It comes in 375ml and 750ml bottles.
Banhez is made by a cooperative of more than 30 farming families in Ejutla, who grow the agave and share the work of the palenque. Barril is a karwinskii agave, a relative of madrecuishe, and makes up only a small part of the blend.
Expect cooked agave, citrus peel and a hint of smoke, with green herbs and white pepper on the palate.
It is a cooperative-made ensamble at a value price, with lighter smoke than many mezcals; compare Mezcal Unión Uno, another fruity blend.
