Charles Krug calls itself Napa Valley's oldest winery: it was founded in 1861, and the Mondavi family bought it in 1943. Peter Mondavi Sr.'s family still runs it today.
Stacy Clark has been the winemaker since 2011. The winery says the 2020 comes mainly from its five family estates in Yountville, so this is largely estate-grown Napa Cabernet.
The winery describes red cherry, baked strawberry and vanilla with hints of fig and coffee bean, then a medium- to full-bodied palate of berry, chocolate and buttery caramel over toasted oak, finishing long and smooth with currant and blueberry.
For Napa history at a fair price, this is the bottle to buy. For a newer vintage from a big name, look at BV Napa Valley.
Serve it just below room temperature with roast beef, braised short ribs or a hard cheese.
