Château Mont-Redon has belonged to the Plantin family since Henri Plantin bought it in 1923, when it had just 2.5 hectares of vines. Their heirs, the Abeille-Fabre family, now run it in the fourth generation, with Pierre Fabre as winemaker. Its roughly 100 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape lie in one piece, and the importer describes it as the largest estate in the appellation.

The 2021 is 60% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre and 1% other permitted varieties, drawn from rolled pebbles, Urgonian limestone and sand. The grapes are fully destemmed and macerated for 15 to 20 days. The best lots spend about a year half in barrel and half in vat. It's 15.5% alcohol.

The producer describes black fruit with subtle roasted notes, and Wine Spectator finds incense, tobacco and smoked plum.

Against Vieux Télégraphe La Crau 2021, Mont-Redon costs about half as much; for a 2021 Châteauneuf to open now, choose Mont-Redon.

Wine Spectator suggests drinking it now through 2030. The importer pairs it with red meat in sauce, game and cow's-milk cheese.

Very fine, focused tannins that counterpoint the juiciness on the mid-palate and drive the very long, bright and minerally finish.
