Cocchi Americano was created in 1891 by Giulio Cocchi in Asti, and the house says it is still made to his original recipe. It is a white-wine aperitif bottled at 16.5%, flavoured with gentian, wormwood, cinchona bark and bitter orange peel.
The name has nothing to do with America: it comes from amaricato, meaning made bitter, and from the American habit of drinking vermouth with ice and soda.
If you are making a Vesper or a Corpse Reviver No. 2 and want the bitterness of the old Kina Lillet, Cocchi Americano is the better choice than Lillet Blanc. For a sweet red vermouth from the same house, see Cocchi Vermouth di Torino.
Cocchi serves it chilled over ice with a splash of soda and an orange peel, or as a Spritz Americano.
Keep it in the fridge once opened. The rooster on the label is a symbol of Asti. More bottles are under vermouth and aperitif, and the rest of our liquor is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
