Licor 43 Cuarenta y Tres Liqueur

The name is the recipe count: 43 ingredients, citrus and vanilla among them, macerated, blended and rested for six to nine months. The Zamora family created it in Cartagena, Spain, in 1946, and the US bottling is 31%.

It is bright gold and lightly spiced, running from vanilla to brown sugar and baking spice over orange.

Buy Licor 43 for a Carajillo, the Spanish espresso drink that has become a bar staple. Kahlua makes a coffee drink taste of more coffee; Licor 43 makes it taste of vanilla and citrus, which is the point.

The producer's signature serves are the Pilé 43 and the Mini Beer shot. For a Carajillo, shake it with hot espresso and pour over ice. It also plays well with dark rum without taking over.
