Cutwater Spirits is a San Diego distillery founded in 2016 by former Ballast Point executives. Its Miramar facility, opened in 2017, combines a distillery with an in-house canning line, and Anheuser-Busch has owned the company since 2019.

The base is real tequila: Cutwater Tequila Blanco, made in Tequila, Mexico, from 100% blue agave, mixed with lime and triple sec. Each 12-ounce can is 12.5% alcohol, and the brand lists 360 calories and 27 grams of sugar per can. It is labeled gluten-free.

The brand describes bright lime over a tequila with a grassy aroma and cooked-agave sweetness.

Against Cutwater Strawberry Margarita, the Lime Margarita is stronger and sticks to the classic sour recipe; for a straight-up margarita with no fruit twist, choose the Lime.

The brand suggests a salted rim and a lime wheel, or drinking it straight from the can. For a bar-style pour, rub a lime wedge on the rim, dip it in coarse salt, fill a rocks glass with ice and pour the can over. Coarse salt sticks better than table salt.
