Dubonnet Rouge Aperitif 1L

The Dubonnet sold in the US is made by Heaven Hill in Bardstown, Kentucky, and bottled at 19%. It is a different product from the French Dubonnet, which is weaker and sweeter. Joseph Dubonnet first sold his aperitif in Paris in 1846.

The American version is a red-wine aperitif with quinine, closer in style to a rouge quinquina: raisin and dark fruit, herbs and a bittersweet finish.

Under $20 for a litre, it is the best-value red aperitif we carry. For a French quinquina with more wine character, choose Byrrh; for a fruitier red, try Lillet Rouge.

The classic serve is two parts Dubonnet to one part gin with a lemon twist over ice, a drink long linked with the Queen Mother. It is also good with lemonade or soda.
