Flowers Vineyards & Winery helped pioneer the ridge-top vineyards of the far Sonoma Coast. Its estate Camp Meeting Ridge vineyard, planted in 1991, sits close to 1,500 feet up and about two miles from the Pacific, and Sea View Ridge followed in 1998. The vineyards are farmed with organic and biodynamic practices.
The Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is the entry to the Flowers range, made from estate fruit grown between 1,150 and 1,875 feet plus a few growers. Retailers report native-yeast fermentation and 18% new French oak, and Jeb Dunnuck notes that 80% was barrel-fermented. It's 13.5% alcohol.
The winemaker describes a bright, energetic wine with Meyer lemon and just-ripe mandarin, herbs, green citrus oil, preserved lemon, a hint of spice and briny, ocean-spray minerality.
Against La Crema Sonoma Coast, Flowers comes from higher, colder estate sites and has far more tension; for a serious coastal Chardonnay, choose Flowers.
Drink it now or over the next decade, with oysters, crab, halibut or roast chicken.
