Fonseca Guimaraens is a sister house of Taylor's within The Fladgate Partnership, and its winemaker is David Guimaraens. The fruit comes from its quintas near Pinhão, including Quinta do Panascal. Fonseca released the 2017 as a Classic Vintage.

2017 brought the earliest harvest in a generation, with low yields. The field blend includes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. The grapes are foot-trodden in granite lagares, and the wine spent two years in large French oak vats before being bottled unfiltered. It's 20% alcohol, with 98 g/L of residual sugar.

The producer describes dark woodland fruit, fresh red berries, slatey minerality and cedary, balsamic notes, with firm, sinewy tannins. Wine Spectator calls it a big, old-school throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace.

Against Taylor Fladgate LBV 2020, the Fonseca is an unfiltered Classic Vintage Port made for long cellaring; for a bottle to lay down, choose the Fonseca.

Decant it before serving to leave the sediment behind. Wine Enthusiast suggests drinking it from 2030.

"The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when originally seen, has now been in bottle for a couple of years. It is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar. This is a great Fonseca, distinctive, with a touch of eucalyptus and plums, but also loaded with delicious fruit. Like its Taylor's siblings, there is also a fine backbone. I'd say it is a step behind the Taylor's duo this year, but not by much. It will age well, to say the least. Beat after 2030."
