Groth Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2023 750ml

Dennis and Judy Groth bought their Oakville property in 1981 and crushed their first grapes the next year. The winery is still family-owned, led by their daughter Suzanne Groth, with 165 acres in the Oakville AVA.

The 2023 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc is 89% Sauvignon Blanc and 11% Sémillon. Wine Advocate reports it was fermented in a mix of second-fill acacia barrels, neutral French oak and concrete eggs, then aged six months on its lees, which gives more texture than an all-steel wine. It's a different bottling from Groth's Oakville estate Sauvignon Blanc.

The winery describes a bright yellow color, melon, green apple, pear and beeswax, then crisp citrus and melon and a long, juicy finish.

Against Cakebread, Groth is rounder and more textured; for a Napa white with real depth at under $30, choose Groth.

The winery suggests light seafood, vegetable dishes or a grilled chicken pesto sandwich.
