Hess Collection Allomi Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023 750ml

Allomi is a single vineyard on the eastern side of Napa Valley, beyond Howell Mountain, and Donald Hess bought it in 1995. It covers 210 acres planted to six Cabernet clones.

The Hess Collection is part of the family-owned Hess Persson Estates, and Stephanie Pope makes the wine. The 2023 is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 11% Petite Sirah and a little Malbec and Petit Verdot. It spent 18 months in barrel, and the new wood was American oak rather than French, which is unusual for Napa and gives it its vanilla and baking-spice side.

The winery describes vanilla, strawberry and cedar on the nose, a soft entry, then a juicy, fruit-forward palate with cocoa and a smooth finish. It's 14% alcohol.

For a single-vineyard Napa Cabernet, the price is hard to beat. If you prefer the French-oak style, look at BV Napa Valley; if you like vanilla and spice, buy this.

Open it about half an hour ahead and serve it just below room temperature. It suits grilled steak or braised short ribs.
