The Kraken Black Spiced launched in 2010 and is bottled at 47%, or 94 proof, well above most spiced rums. The base is Caribbean molasses rum, blended with spices that include cinnamon, ginger and clove, and the US importer is Proximo Spirits.
It is nearly black in the glass, with root beer, cinnamon, dates, vanilla, brown sugar and coffee, and a toasty, dry, spicy finish.
Kraken is the bolder choice next to Captain Morgan: darker, less sweet and noticeably stronger. If you want spice without the extra proof, Chairman's Reserve Spiced is the gentler sipper.
Mix it with ginger beer and lime over ice, or with cola and plenty of ice. Because of the higher strength, an ounce and a half is enough for a tall drink.
It comes in 750ml and 1L bottles. More spiced rums are under rum. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
