Lazzaroni makes its amaretto the long way: Amaretti del Chiostro di Saronno cookies are infused in alcohol, rather than the flavor being built from an almond essence. The company has been making it in the town of Saronno since 1851, and it is bottled at 24%.

That infusion is what you taste: baked amaretti and almond, sweet and warming, with a toasty edge.

Against Disaronno, which is built on apricot kernel, Lazzaroni tastes more of the bakery. Buy it if you love amaretti cookies, or to set next to a dessert plate. For another amaretto from an old Italian house, try Luxardo Amaretto di Saschira.

Laird & Company, the US importer, suggests it neat or in an Amaretto Sour. A splash in hot coffee or over vanilla gelato is good too.
