Matua says it made New Zealand's first Sauvignon Blanc, just 400 bottles in 1974. Brothers Bill and Ross Spence founded the winery around 1970 on an old orchard west of Auckland, and Matua is Māori for head of the family.
Today the grapes come from the South Island, with this bottling labelled Marlborough. It's a regional blend rather than a single vineyard, made to be crisp and bright, and it's sealed with a screw cap. The older company name, Matua Valley, has been dropped from the label.
The winery sums it up as crisp, tropical and bright, with vibrant citrus and tropical fruit.
Against Kim Crawford, Matua is a little lighter and costs a bit less; for the story of where New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc began, choose Matua.
Serve it well chilled as an aperitif or with grilled shrimp, fish tacos or a green salad.
