Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti Le Orme 2022 750ml

Le Orme is Michele Chiarlo's Barbera d'Asti DOCG, imported to the US by Kobrand. It comes from four Chiarlo estates in the Nizza area of Piedmont, including La Court.

It's 100% Barbera from light-colored, lime-rich sandy soils. The importer says it fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with 10 days on the skins, then spent three months in large French oak casks before resting in steel and bottle, at least 16 months in all. The importer and Falstaff list the 2022 at 14% alcohol. Older vintages were labeled Superiore; the 2022 is Barbera d'Asti DOCG.

The importer describes ruby color with violet hues, red cherry and red currant, and a savory finish.

Against Vietti Barbera d’Alba, Le Orme is fresher and costs about half as much; for an everyday Barbera, choose Le Orme.

The importer suggests tomato-sauce pasta, pizza and white fish.
