Nicolas Feuillatte is a growers' cooperative, founded in 1976 and now drawing on about 5,000 member growers. It's the top-selling Champagne in France and third worldwide, and its members' vineyards include 11 of the 17 Grand Cru villages.
Réserve Exclusive Brut, the blue label, is the house's flagship. It is 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, and it ages three to four years, about two and a half times the legal minimum. The cooperative keeps reserve wines from five vintages for each grape.
The house describes it as light, fresh and vibrant, with pear and apricot and a rounded texture from the time in the cellar.
Against Moët Impérial it costs less and drinks just as well; for a big party on a budget, buy the Feuillatte.
The house suggests 7 to 8°C as an aperitif or 10 to 12°C with food, with smoked salmon, prawns, poultry or cheese.
