Miyagikyo is Nikka's second distillery, opened in 1969 in a valley near Sendai where two rivers meet. Where Yoichi heats its stills with coal, Miyagikyo uses steam, at lower temperatures, and that gives a softer, fruitier spirit.
This single malt uses little peated malt and shows a strong sherry cask influence: apricot and persimmon, a little sweet sawdust and pine, milk chocolate, and a gentle, fruity finish. It's bottled at 45%.
For someone who likes Speyside Scotch, this is the Japanese malt to try. For the bolder, smokier Nikka, choose Yoichi.
Sip it neat, or with one cube; it's soft enough not to need water.
We carry it in the 750ml size. The rest of the range is on our Nikka page. More bottles are under Japanese whisky, and the rest of our whiskey is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
