Paul Jaboulet Aine Parallele 45 Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2023 750ml

Paul Jaboulet Aîné is a Rhône house owned by Caroline Frey. Parallèle 45 takes its name from the 45th parallel, which runs over the Jaboulet cellars. The house also makes a Parallèle 45 Blanc; this is the red.

The 2023 is a blend of 53% Grenache, 41% Syrah, 3% Marselan and 3% Carignan, from vines about 40 years old on clay-limestone and alluvial soils strewn with round pebbles. Importer Kobrand says the grapes are farmed organically. The wine spends six months, mostly in stainless steel, which keeps the fruit up front. It's 14.5% alcohol.

Kobrand describes a garnet color and a fruit-forward wine with strawberry, cherry and spice, closing with a powerful finish.

Against Perrin Côtes du Rhône Réserve Rouge, Parallèle 45 is the Grenache-led pick from the Jaboulet house, aged mostly in tank; for a juicy, fruit-forward Côtes du Rhône, choose Parallèle 45.

Kobrand says it's best enjoyed young and suggests vegetable lasagna. It also suits pizza, roast chicken or a burger. Serve it slightly cool, around cellar temperature.
