Rhum Barbancourt Reserve Speciale 5 Star Rum 750ml

Rhum Barbancourt is Haiti's best-known rum house, founded in 1862 and still run by the founding family's descendants. Like French Caribbean rhum agricole, it's distilled from fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses.

The Réserve Spéciale, or Five Star, is aged 8 years in oak, longer than the Three Star, and bottled at 43% alcohol.

It's pale gold with green glints. Expect a rich nose of vanilla and pepper, then a powerful, smooth, well-balanced palate and a long, complex finish of roasted and cooked fruit, prunes and orange marmalade.

Against Barbancourt Three Star, the Five Star has more years in oak and more depth; for a sipping rum at a fair price, choose the Five Star.

Drink it neat, or over ice with a twist of lemon zest to bring out its detail.
