Giuseppe Alberti created Strega in Benevento in 1860, from about 70 herbs and spices. Saffron added to the distillate gives the yellow color, and the liqueur ages a long time in ash barrels before it is bottled at 40%. The Alberti family also founded Italy's Strega Prize for literature in 1947.
It is golden and aromatic: mint, fennel and juniper over honeyed sweetness, with saffron warmth on the finish. It is sweet but not cloying.
Strega sits closer to Yellow Chartreuse than to an amaro: sweet, herbal and not bitter. Buy it as a cheaper, more floral alternative for sipping, or for a Strega Sour.
Strega suggests it neat, on ice or in long drinks, and gives a Strega 75 recipe with sparkling wine. It also brightens a sour made with gin and lemon.
More herbal liqueurs are under liqueurs and cordials. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
