Nikka Coffey Grain is named for its still. The Coffey still is a 19th-century column design that Nikka brought over from Scotland in 1963, and it distils more slowly than a modern column, so more of the grain's flavour survives.
Grain whisky is usually blended away, but this one is bottled on its own at 45%, and it shows why bartenders love it. It's sweet and round: vanilla, toffee and tropical fruit, with a light nuttiness from the oak and a soft, creamy texture. Bourbon drinkers tend to like it straight away.
For someone who drinks bourbon and wants to try Japanese whisky, start here. For Nikka's bolder blend, try From the Barrel.
Sip it neat or on one cube, or use it in an Old Fashioned in place of bourbon.
We carry it in the 750ml size. The rest of the range is on our Nikka page. More bottles are under Japanese whisky, and the rest of our whiskey is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
