Akashi White Oak Japanese Blended Whisky 750ml

Akashi comes from Eigashima Shuzo, a sake and shochu brewery on the coast at Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture that also makes whisky on a very small scale. White Oak is its everyday blend.

It joins grain whisky with peated malt whisky, distilled in Miyake copper pot stills and aged on site in a mix of ex-bourbon, barley shochu and sherry casks and new oak. Lemon, cherry pit, toffee and a hint of sea air on the nose; vanilla and pine nuts on the palate; and a long finish with a touch of peat. It's bottled at 40%.

It's good value for a Japanese whisky from a small, independent producer. For a bigger name at a similar price, try Suntory Toki.
