Uncle Nearest is named for Nathan "Nearest" Green, the enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel to distil and became Jack Daniel's first master distiller after emancipation. Fawn Weaver founded the brand in 2017 to tell his story, and 1884 is its small-batch whiskey.
Each batch is chosen from hand-selected barrels, and the blend is curated by one of Nearest Green's descendants, whose signature is on the back of the bottle. Like all Tennessee whiskey, it's charcoal mellowed. It tastes of brown sugar, waffle cookie and clove, with lemon honey candy, and finishes with caramel, banana and a little Earl Grey. It's bottled at 93 proof (46.5%).
It's a richer, stronger alternative to Gentleman Jack at a similar price. For an older Tennessee whisky, try the George Dickel 12 Year Bottled in Bond.
It makes an excellent hot toddy: 1 1/2oz with a spoon of honey, lemon juice and hot water, garnished with a clove-studded lemon wheel.
