Monkey Shoulder is named after the ache maltmen used to get from turning barley by hand on the malting floor. William Grant & Sons, the family behind Glenfiddich and Balvenie, launched it in 2005 as a blended malt: only Speyside single malts, no grain whisky.
That all-malt make-up gives it more body than most blends at this price. It opens with fresh apple and vanilla, turns to butterscotch and orange on the palate, and ends with a little oak and spice. It's bottled at 43%.
For cocktails, this is the bottle we reach for: it holds its own in a whisky sour where a lighter blend disappears. To taste the single malts behind it, look at our Balvenie bottles.
Shake 2oz with 3/4oz lemon juice, 3/4oz simple syrup and an egg white, then strain over ice for a whisky sour with a proper malt backbone.
We carry it in 750ml and 1.75L. More bottles are under blended Scotch, and the rest of our Scotch whisky is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.

Kara Newman found a bright fresh-cut apple aroma, then butterscotch richness, mild smoke and citrus, calling it equally good neat or in cocktails. |
