High West Double Rye Whiskey Not Chill Filtered 92 Proof 750ml

High West made its name in Park City, Utah, by blending whiskeys other people had distilled, and Double Rye is the bottle that did it: two straight ryes married together, one young and very high in rye, the other older and rounder. The exact makeup has changed over the years.

The result is the oddest rye on our shelf, in a good way. Mint, clove, cinnamon and licorice root on the nose, and a botanical streak that more than one reviewer has compared to gin. It's bottled at 92 proof and not chill filtered, so it keeps its oils and texture.

If you like your rye herbal and loud, this is the one. If you want a classic caramel-and-spice rye, buy Rittenhouse instead.

It makes an excellent Sazerac, where the absinthe rinse meets the whiskey's own licorice. In a Manhattan, use a drier vermouth than usual.
