Sandeman Apitiv Reserve White Port is a white Port from Portugal's Douro Valley, bottled at 20% alcohol. As the name suggests, it is made to be served as an aperitif.
It is made from white grapes picked slightly over-ripe; fermentation is stopped with grape spirit to keep natural sweetness. The wines then age in oak casks in Sandeman's cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the final blend averages seven years, from wines aged four to nine years.
Expect a golden color with candied orange zest, flowers, dried fruit and a balsamic note, then a balanced, off-dry palate with dried fruit and a long finish. Decanter gives it 93 points.
White Port is Portugal's favorite aperitif: lighter and fresher than red Port, and the base of the classic white Port and tonic.
Serve it chilled at 10 to 12°C on its own or over ice with tonic and an orange slice, and drink within about eight weeks of opening.
