El Tesoro Mundial Collection Laphroaig Edition is a 100% agave añejo tequila from Arandas in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, bottled at 40% alcohol in a 750ml bottle with its gift box.
El Tesoro is made at La Alteña (NOM 1139) by master distiller Carlos Camarena, from tahona-crushed highland agave. The Mundial Collection finishes single barrels of El Tesoro in casks from famous spirits around the world; this first edition, released in 2021, rests in ex-bourbon barrels and is then finished in casks that held Laphroaig 10 Year Old, the peated Islay Scotch.
Expect grilled orange, toasted vanilla, cigar tobacco and baking spice, with a long peppery finish and a hint of iodine and smoke. The Beverage Testing Institute gives it 95 points, calling it super interesting and just gorgeous.
It is a bridge between añejo tequila and smoky Scotch, and a great gift for whisky drinkers.
