Henry Varnay Blanc de Blancs Brut is a dry French sparkling wine (vin mousseux) from the Loire Valley, made from 100% Ugni Blanc and bottled at 11% alcohol.
Blanc de blancs means it is made only from white grapes. The fruit comes from calcareous soils between Angers and Tours, and the wine rests at least six months in bottle before release.
Expect a pale yellow color with fine, steady bubbles, crisp green apple and melon on the nose, and citrus, apple and a light bready note on the palate. It is light-bodied, with lively acidity and a clean, dry finish.
It is not Champagne, and is not trying to be: this is an easy, affordable bubbly for parties, toasts and mimosas.
Serve it well chilled as an aperitif, with oysters and shellfish, sushi or light cheeses, or use it in mimosas and spritzes.
