Tiberio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2023 750ml

V93

Tiberio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2023 is a dry red wine from Abruzzo in central Italy, made from 100% Montepulciano and bottled at 14.5% alcohol.

Agricola Tiberio is a family estate in Cugnoli, farmed with sustainable methods. The grapes come from massal-selection vines at about 350 meters on clay-limestone soils, are hand-picked and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel. The wine sees no oak and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Expect black raspberry, sour cherry, violet, clove, sage and licorice, with juicy acidity, a mineral core and firm tannins. Vinous (Eric Guido) gives it 93 points.

Most Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is soft and simple; Tiberio's is a fresher, more serious version at an everyday price.

Serve it slightly cool, around 60°F, with pasta with meat sauce, pizza, grilled sausages, roast lamb or aged pecorino.

Vinous

"Purple-hued and deeply complex, the 2023 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo has an inviting bouquet of black raspberries, cloves, dried sage and licorice. Juicy acidity lends a jovial character to sour cherries, wild berries and a tactile mineral core. It finishes long and pleasantly staining with a sour berry inflection and edgy tannins. There's a tenacity to the 2023 that keeps me coming back for more, but I'm also excited to see what cellaring will reveal."
