Harlan Estate Napa Valley Red 2020 is a dry red Bordeaux-style blend from the western hills of Oakville in Napa Valley, California, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Harlan Estate was founded by Bill Harlan in 1984, with 1990 as its first vintage, and is one of Napa's most collected wines. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically; the grapes are sorted by hand, fermented in small lots in wooden fermenters and aged about two years in French oak, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Expect chocolate-covered cherries, mulberry and crème de cassis with tar, violets, tilled soil and a hint of truffle. The palate is tightly wound and complex, with super-fine tannins and a long, mineral finish.

The Wine Independent (Lisa Perrotti-Brown) gives it 100 points, James Suckling 99, Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 95, calling it one of the best wines of a challenging vintage, and Jeb Dunnuck 94.

Decant for several hours if opening now, or cellar it for decades; serve with prime rib or roast lamb.

The Wine Independent

"The 2020 Harlan Estate is deep purple-black in color. It needs a lot of swirling to bring out notions of chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries, and crème de cassis, followed by hints of tar, violets, redcurrant jelly, and tilled soil, with a waft of black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate is very tightly wound, with lots of mineral, red berry, and black fruit layers intertwined to offer an incredibly complex, yet beautifully poised, experience. The tannins are super fine-grained and the tension gives an incredible finish with a minerally swing. Wow: it's a pure, effortless, truthful wine."

James Suckling

"The 2020 Harlan Estate is such a pretty wine—compact, tightly knit, with a coiled-up energy that delivers surprise and intrigue in every swirl and sip as the wine evolves in the glass. Leading with beautifully delicate wild herbs, dried and crushed bay laurel and sage, red and black currant fruit, and a pop of liquorice intermixed with cigar leaf. Medium to full-bodied with a richness to the mid-palate and intense grip from the wine’s multidimensional acidity. Almost feathery and extremely fine tannins frame all this, and the wine finishes long, cool, and so composed."
