Pelotón de la Muerte Maguey Espadín is a joven (unaged) mezcal artesanal from Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca, Mexico, sold in a one-liter bottle.
It is made by the Santiago family palenque, with mezcalero Cutberto Santiago. The espadín is roasted for about five days in a stone-lined pit, crushed by a tahona, fermented in open-air wooden vats and distilled twice in copper pot stills. The name, "brigade of death", recalls insurgents of Mexico's War of Independence.
Wine Enthusiast (Kara Newman) gives it 91 points for honey and campfire smoke leading to lemon peel and eucalyptus. The Beverage Testing Institute also gives it 91, noting gentle smoke and a soft palate.
A full liter of tahona-crushed mezcal at this price makes it one of the best mezcal values we sell; compare Palomo, also sold in a 1L bottle.
Use it in mezcal margaritas, palomas and negronis, or sip it with orange slices.
Shop more mezcal and all tequila and mezcal, with Brooklyn pickup and same-day delivery across NYC.
