Tapatío Reposado is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila from Arandas in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, bottled at 40% alcohol in a 750ml bottle.
It is made at La Alteña (NOM 1139), founded in 1937 by Don Felipe Camarena and run today by his grandson, master distiller Carlos Camarena, from estate-grown agave. The agave is slow-baked four days in masonry ovens, crushed by roller mill and tahona, fermented in small wooden vats with the fibers and a house yeast, and distilled twice in small copper pot stills. It rests about eight months in used bourbon barrels, four times the legal minimum. Charbay is the US importer.
Charbay describes delicate caramel with notes of oak and smoke. Wine Enthusiast (Kara Newman) gives it 93 points as a lean, lively reposado with citrus, sage, white pepper and salinity, and VinePair 93.
It is one of the most respected traditional reposados at an everyday price.
