Château Duhart-Milon is an 1855 Fourth Growth in Pauillac. The Rothschild family of Lafite bought it in 1962 and grew the vineyard from 17 to 76 hectares on the Carruades plateau west of Lafite, where Lafite's team manages the vines. There is no château building; the wine is made at a chai in Pauillac.
The vines grow on fine gravel on the Milon hillside and are vinified plot by plot. The 2016 is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, at 13.5% alcohol. The second wine is Moulin de Duhart.
SommSelect describes a medium-bodied wine with fine-grained tannins and plum, blueberry, cassis, violet and tobacco. Decanter calls 2016 a vintage that suits the personality of Duhart, juicy but restrained, and James Suckling calls it a juicy and savory young 2016.
Against Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2017, Duhart-Milon costs much less and drinks sooner; for a Lafite-family Pauillac to open this decade, choose Duhart-Milon.
SommSelect suggests decanting for two to three hours and drinking from 2024 to 2040. Serve with steak or rack of lamb.
