Tignanello first appeared in 1970 and helped start the Super Tuscan movement. The Antinori family says it was the first Sangiovese aged in barrique and among the first modern Tuscan reds to include Cabernet. It's made only in good years.
It comes from a single 77-hectare vineyard on limestone-rich soils at 350 to 400 meters. The blend is mainly Sangiovese, about 80%, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Malolactic took place in small oak barrels, then the wine aged 15 months in French and Hungarian oak and a year in bottle.
The winery describes intense ruby red, with cherry, strawberry and blackberry, violet and rose, roasted coffee and cocoa, and a vibrant, layered palate finishing on pepper, licorice and herbs.
Against Opus One, Tignanello is the Sangiovese-led Tuscan icon at well under half the price; for Italian food, choose Tignanello.
Decant it an hour ahead and serve it with bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù or aged Parmigiano.
