Argiano is a historic estate at Sant'Angelo in Colle, in the southwestern part of the Brunello di Montalcino zone. It covers 120 hectares of vines, olive groves and woods, and the vineyards are farmed organically.
The Rosso di Montalcino DOC is 100% Sangiovese, a selected Sangiovese Grosso clone, from about 30 hectares around the winery, and Argiano says it gets the same care as its Brunello. K&L reports aging mainly in large neutral French oak casks. The 2024 is 13.5% alcohol and closed with a DIAM technical cork, per Falstaff.
James Suckling calls it pristine, with red cherries, red currants and fragrant violets. Falstaff notes strawberry, cherry and a hint of violets, with precise, vibrant acidity and smooth tannins, and Vinous finds it energetic and gently chewy with a subtle black fruit finish.
Against Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello 2019, Argiano Rosso is the younger, fresher Sangiovese at about half the price; for weeknight pasta or pizza, choose Argiano.
It's made to drink young, unlike Brunello. Serve it with tomato-sauced pasta or roast chicken.
