BOND was founded by Bill Harlan of the Harlan Estate family as a range of single-vineyard Napa Valley reds, inspired by Burgundy's idea of terroir. Melbury sits alongside St. Eden, Vecina, Quella and Pluribus, and its first vintage was 1999.
The Melbury vineyard covers about seven acres of rocky, south-facing hillside near Lake Hennessy, according to the winemaker's notes on Wine.com. The name honours a London neighbourhood. BOND does not publish the blend, and retailers file it as Cabernet Sauvignon or as a Bordeaux-style blend.
The winemaker describes plush red fruit, currants and bing cherries, with spice and violets, an elegant, supple wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate called the 2016 "practically electric with energetic fruit", and Vinous found it powerful yet medium in body.
Against BOND Vecina 2016, Melbury is the red-fruited, supple one of the pair; for elegance from the Lake Hennessy hillside, choose Melbury.
