Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Cru Classé de Graves in Pessac-Léognan, owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard. The estate is a single 80-hectare block with its own cooperage since 1993.
2019 was the final year of a three-year organic conversion, and the estate is certified organic from this vintage. The red grand vin is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot from vines averaging 48 years. It was fermented as whole berries in small wooden vats, then aged 18 months on lees in barrel, 60% new.
Winemaker Fabien Teitgen describes a nearly black wine with fresh red fruit, spice, herbs and floral hints, a concentrated, generous palate with firm but smooth tannins, and a long finish of liquorice, cinnamon, smoke and flint.
Against Château Haut-Bailly 2020, Smith Haut Lafitte 2019 is the organic-certified, Cabernet-led choice; for a Pessac-Léognan with a year more in bottle, choose Smith Haut Lafitte.
James Suckling suggests drinking it after 2028, and Decanter gives 2029 to 2050. Decant it well ahead.
