Conundrum comes from the Wagner family, the family behind Caymus in Napa Valley. It now has its own label within the Wagner Family of Wine portfolio, and Jon Bolta is the winemaker.
It's a blend from several California growing regions. The winery's current page lists Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier; older sources also named Muscat Canelli, and Wine Spectator notes that the proportions are kept secret. The producer mentions a hint of oak in the wine. It's 13.5% alcohol.
The winery describes apricot, pear and honeysuckle on the nose, then peach, apple and citrus with that hint of oak. It's deliberately off-dry, the winery says, with an initial sweetness balanced by acidity.
Against Josh Cellars Seaswept, Conundrum is the off-dry, four-grape blend; with spicy Thai or Vietnamese food, choose Conundrum.
The winery suggests fajitas and Thai or Vietnamese dishes, where the touch of sweetness takes the edge off chili heat. Serve it chilled, as an aperitif or at the table, and drink it young while the fruit is fresh.
